I have a key marked "Do Not Duplicate." Can I get a copy of it anyway?
Keys marked "Do Not Duplicate," " Do Not Copy," or "Unlawful to Copy" may be duplicated only if a letter of authorization from the owner or supervisor is presented with the request for duplication. The letter should be on company letterhead and identify the key to be made, the number of keys, the person picking up the keys, and the name and number of the person writing the letter. The person picking up the keys will be required to fill out a "Request for Restricted Keys" form. We reserve the right to refuse to duplicate any key marked "Do Not Duplicate."

Is the "Do Not Duplicate" marking on a key enough for controlling key duplication?
No. While we respect the "Do Not Duplicate" marking on a key, many discount stores do not. To effectively prevent unauthorized key duplication, a restricted key lock should be used such as Medeco or Keymark Locks.

Why can't Medeco keys be duplicated?
Medeco is a company dedicated to providing higher security for its customers. One of the ways they provide security is by controlling who is allowed to purchase duplicates of the keys. Medeco keys can only be duplicated by the authorized users. A user is authorized by possessing a Medeco authorization card for their lock, by having their signature on an authorization card kept by their locksmith, or by information recorded by Medeco at their factory.

Why do some Medeco keys have to be ordered and others can be made in minutes?
There are different levels of security offered by Medeco. The lower levels allow any locksmith to provide duplicate keys, but those keys must be sent away for and the customer is responsible for keeping the authorization card. If that card is lost, duplicate keys can no longer be made. The next levels of security only allow the locksmith that sold you the lock to provide duplicates. In this system, that locksmith's lock uses a key blank that is unique to him/her. This locksmith also keeps records of authorized users and duplicates can br made in minutes. Both of these types of systems can be provided by York Lock & Key. The highest of all Medeco key systems is typically used in schools and government buildings. In these systems, the keys are made at the factory which also keeps record of who is authorized to request duplicate keys.

Can I buy lock openning tools?
No, it is illegal in most states to sell or possess burglary or entry tools. York Lock & Key will not sell entry tools to anyone.

How can I choose the right locksmith when I need service?
Most locksmiths advertise in the yellow pages. Look for one close to you or one who clearly indicates he offers the services that you need. Check the ad to see if it indicates membership in a locksmith association such as the Associated Locksmiths of America. Membership in an association is not a guarantee of satisfaction. However, only the most concientious business person takes the trouble to join a professional trade association.

Is there such a thing as a key that can open all locks?
No. A "master" key is a key which works many locks. In order for a particular master key to work in a lock, the lock has to be set up to work on that master key. Locks are typically master keyed in hotels, office buildings, and schools. Rest assured that there is no such master key that opens all locks.
